Important Driving Information
Your vacation begins where the asphalt ends on this untamed expanse of Outer Banks shoreline just south of the Virginia border. A four-wheel drive vehicle...and an adventurous spirit...are required to explore this beach community! There are no paved roads, no hotels or restaurants. What you will find is an uncomplicated, fourteen-mile stretch of wide sandy beaches, dense maritime forests and marshy sound-side coves. Home to the wild horses of Currituck County, catching a glimpse of these amazing creatures is practically commonplace. Remember, however, that they are wild so do not approach them. County ordinance states that you may not come within 50 feet of the horses at any time. Feeding, riding and petting a wild horse is prohibited. While a wild-horse sighting is always an exciting event, always use caution and keep your distance...these are wild animals!
Other Quick Facts :
*Always arrive before dark because the beach is more difficult to navigate at night.
*Bring a tire-pressure gauge. We recommend lowering your tire pressure to 18-20 psi.
*Check area tide charts prior to arrival. Low tide is ideal for beach driving. Click Here!
*Avoid driving through the surf; salt water is extremely corrosive.
*All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles are not recommended due to low ground clearance.
*Follow all posted speed limits.
*Drive on the hard-packed sand near the edge of the water or close to the dunes. Leave the middle of the beach available for parked vehicles and beachgoers. Please note that the county now requires driving on the high/dune side of the beach during the summer peak from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There is a 2.5 mile stretch where this is enforced and you will see signs.
*Always be alert for moving vehicles when walking across the hard-packed sand.
*No vehicle of any type may park or unload at the North Beach Access at any time. You must park or unload past the 1/2-mile mark. VIOLATORS WILL BE TOWED.
*Drivers must be 16 years of age and possess a valid driver's license.
*ATVs are NOT permitted.
